Take Route 94 about 2.4 miles north of Vernon and 0.6 mile north of intersection with Maple Grange Road
Main lot that trail goes through may have a no parking sign. The neighboring lots/pullovers toward Heaven Hill Farm have been open and busy as of 3/17/21

Rotate the street view on the attached map to the east to see the parking area and the northbound trail to NJ Section 1. Rotate to the northwest to see the southbound trail to Nj Section 2 which crosses the stile in the picture and proceeds across the field. 3/17/21

Here is the route I used to get to this point from I-84. Take Exit 4E off I-84 near Middletown, NY, towards NY 17. Go east (compass southeast) for about 5 miles to Exit 124. At the end of the ramp go left (south) on NY 17A towards Florida , New York . NY 94 merges and the two routes coincide for a few mile to Warwick. there NY 17A goes left. This is 11 miles from the NY 17 exit. Continue straight ahead on NY 94. In approximately 4 miles the road crosses into New jersey and becomes NJ 94. The trail crossing is 2 miles further just south of the intersection with County Road 515. Parking is on the left.

The parking area is on the east side of NJ 94 just south of the intersection with County Road 515. Parking for 6-8 cars in the official AT parking lot, but there is additional parking for several cars on dirt shoulder just north of the parking lot. Heaven Hill Farm is within view of crossing and has drinks, snacks etc. Area is a madhouse during early fall with all of the harvest activities that occur at the farm.3/17/21

Follow NJ 94 1.8 miles north of Vernon to Maple Grange Road. This intersection is 0.6 miles south of the AT parking lot on Rte. 94 (See Previous entry). Go west on Maple Grange Road about 1 mile to Canal Road. This is just before Maple Grange Road crosses a bridge. Go right on paved Canal Road 0.4 miles to end of road. There is a parking area on the left. There is also a large parking lot at the other end of the bike trail.

The marker on the attached map indicates the parking area. Beyond the parking area Canal Road is gated. It becomes a bike path. Go north on it 0.1 miles. The southbound AT comes in from the right, and turns north on the bike path. This crosses a bridge, then just beyond that, the AT goes off to the left at kiosk with map. This is a better option for parking to access Pochuck Boardwalk. Can have large puddles during wet season.5/9/21

For a route from I-84 see Mile 3.8. Follow this route except for the final turn onto County Road 565. Instead continue on County road 517 for 1.5 miles past the state line.N41.14.143 W074.28.825

The map attached here is similar to the one above except that a street view is included. . Rotate the street view to the east to see the west end of the trail across the boardwalk across Pochuk Swamp. This would be the northbound direction. The southbound trail is more difficult to see, but if the street view is rotated to the northwest, it can be made out starting from the end of the guardrail in the picture.5/9/21

11/27/20 Beautiful fall day and there had to be 30 cars on both sides of street parked parallel to road. Extremely popular day stroll/dog walk area. Road is busy and area a madhouse in nice weather.

Hikers are urged to obey No Parking signs on Rt. 517. Parking along 517 is very limited and cars parked in the No Parking zone have been ticketed recently. 5/9/21

From Vernon, NJ take Rt 94 North. Turn left on Maple Grange Rd. This passes Canal Rd on the right. Turn right on Rt 517. This will pass parking where the AT crosses Rt 517. Turn left onto Rt 565. The AT crosses the road in about a mile. This is shortly before the intersection of Rt 565 and Glenwood Mountain Road. There is a small pull off on 565 right before the AT crosses 565.

Room for absolutely no more than two cars. Going south the trail becomes a little more strenuous. Going north the trail is fairly level and crosses some bogs. 3/17/21 (revalidated May 2023)

Continue to follow this for about 8 miles to the intersection Pine Hill Turnpike (County Road 1) in Pine Hill. Continue straight ahead onto Glenwood Road (County Road 26). In 3 miles cross into New Jersey. where the road becomes County Road 517. In another 0.4 miles turn left on County Road and proceed another mile to the trail crossing.

From the directions for Rt 565 above, go just past the pull-off of 565. Turn right on Glenwood Mtn. Rd. When Glenwood Mtn. Rd. comes to a dead end, turn right on Liberty Corner Rd. The AT is approximately .4 miles from there. There is no actual parking near but it can be a drop off point. The marker indicates the point where the northbound trail leaves the road. Rotate the street view to the east to see the trail at this point. The southbound trail goes north on the road for 120 feet, then goes left into the woods.

There is a gravel area just off the road on Walkill Rd. This is private land and parking is not permitted. We did ask and that area is for farming vehicles only. Even drop offs would be difficult unless done quick. Road has a surprisingly steady traffic flow and not much of a shoulder. 3/17/21
Editor note: Maybe a half of a mile past the AT is a parking pull off for Pochuk Mountain State Forest. The lot is on the right after left hand turn junction with Oil City Road. Lot can hold 6 or so cars and has a kiosk. There is a huge deep puddle near entrance that always seems full. Trails from there lead to vicinity of AT and Pochuk Shelter. 3/17/21

See directions to the parking area for the viewing area off Oil City Road in Walkill River Wildlife Refuge. (See mile 9.0). From there continue east 0.7 miles to the intersection with Lake Walkill Road (AKA Liberty Corners Road). Go right. In 0.4 miles the road crosses into New Jersey. Continue another 0.3 miles to the trail crossing. See previous listing for information about parking (or lack thereof) at this point.

The southbound trail comes out of the woods from the east, turns right on the road for about 120 feet, then goes left (west) into the woods. The map attached here is similar to the one in the previous listing, but the street view shows the point where the southbound trail leaves the road. Rotate the street view to the northwest to see the trail. Saw a truck parked in front of driveway and blockade rope of the house that is the potable water supply for the area and Pochuck Shelter. House is abandoned and the state keeps faucet on for hiker use. Not sure if parking was legal, but there was no sign. 5/3/21

See directions to the Walkill River National Wildlife Refuge parking (mile 9.0). This is indicated by the marker on the attached map. Any Parking Safety postings for this location should be made at Mile 9.0

Follow the Liberty Loop Trail east from the parking area. It parallels the road for 0.1-0.2 miles, then goes right along the east side of the marsh. This is the right-of-way of an old railroad. It now has well groomed gravel that leads to Owens Station. This is part of the Wallkill Refuge and has parking/fishing and a handicapped canoe/kayak launch. Rentals in season. Check with Refuge about overnight parking. In 0.3-0.4 miles, the AT is reached. The southbound trail goes straight ahead and circles around the marsh, reaching Oil City Road at the northwest corner of the marsh (Mile 9.0). The northbound trail goes left into the woods seen at the bottom center of the satellite view and crosses a swampy area on puncheons eventually reaching Lake Walkill Road (Liberty Corners Road) (Mile 7.0). 2/2/21

From NJ 284 just south of the NY/NJ state line, go east on State Line Road. Somewhere this changes its name to Oil City Road, a different one than at Mile 10.3. After passing Carnegie Road, the road is the route of the AT as evidenced by the white blazes. In 1.9 miles at the northwest corner of the Liberty Marsh, the AT goes right (south). There is not much parking right here, but if you continue another 0.2 -0.3 miles, the parking area for the Liberty Marsh Area of the Walkill River National Wildlife is on the right. While there was no sign prohibiting it when I was there, the ATC guide to NY/NJ says there is no overnight parking within the Wildlife Refuge of which this is a part. The marker indicates the parking area. The street view to the south from this point shows the parking area. GPS N41.2837 W74.5261

Walk west on the Liberty Loop Trail which parallels the road to return to the AT. The southbound follows the road west. The northbound trail goes left and begins to circle the marsh going south along the west side of the marsh, then east along the south side and then north part way along the east side before going right and entering the woods heading towards Liberty Corners Road. Just south of the NY/NJ state line, go east on State Line Road. Somewhere this changes its name to Oil City Road, a different one than at Mile 10.3. In 1.3 miles, the road crosses the Walkill River. Just beyond the bridge there is a parking lot for Fishing and Canoe Access on the left. Presumably parking for hikers is OK. While there was no sign, the ATC guide to NY/J says there is no overnight parking within the Walkill River National Wildlife Refuge of which this is a part.

From the north follow NY 284 south to the state line where the road becomes NJ 184. Immediately past the state line, go left on State Line Road. This crosses back into New York. In 0.8 miles go right on Lower Road. This becomes Oil City Road once it re-enters New Jersey. The crossing is about 0.3 miles from State Line Road.
From the south follow NJ 284 north from the intersection with Nj 23 in Sussex. In 6.2 miles go right on Oil City Road. It is about 0.4 miles to the crossing.

The southbound trail goes west while the northbound trail goes east and starts to climb a hill.No defined parking area, although you could leave a car for a day hike. 8/13/19

Route from south: From the intersection of NJ 23 and NJ 284 in Sussex, go north 6.3 miles on NJ 284 past Quarryville to AT crossing. This is 0.1 miles past the intersection with Oil City Road.
Route from north: From Unionville follow NY 284 south. This becomes NJ 284 once it crosses the state line. The crossing is 0.4 miles past the intersection with State Line Road.

Parking is in a large dirt pull-off on the west side of the road. The crossing is indicated by the marker on the attached map. GPS N41.28832 W74.5521. The parking area and the southbound trail to Section 3 can be seen by rotating the street views from this point to the west. The northbound trail to Section 2 an be seen going off to the right in the north view. 9/7/20

Area is big pull off that always seems to have a large puddle in the middle of it. Room for 5 or so cars logically parked. Short bushwhacked trail leads to AT. To go northbound cross road and go immediately over bridge and puncheon. Go uphill into open field going southbound. 9/7/20
